5 Tips For Holiday Health

November is harvest time!

Mmmm.. the aroma of a stuffed turkey cooking in the oven, the yams, green beans, mashed potatoes, fresh salad and home-made pies. We look forward to sharing with family and friends, relaxing and enjoying outdoor adventures.

My daughter and her husband are moving so we will be in Denver for Thanksgiving helping them get settled into their new home. What about you? What are you planning?

Many of my clients have mixed emotions about the holidays. They ask me, “How can I maintain my sanity around certain family members? How can I have fun and maintain strong boundaries?”

Or, “Do you have any tips, healthy recipes or advice on not over-eating?”

Let’s address this last question first.

The 5 secrets to maintain health during the holidays:  

  1. Use stevia, maple syrup or honey instead of sugar.
  2. Control your portions.
  3. Everyday drink ½ your weight in ounces of water or in cranberry-water  (mix 1/8 cup of unsweetened cranberry juice with 8 ounces of water) Cranberry-water also helps flush water weight.
  4. Drink a cup of hot lemon water before bed to alkalize the body.
  5. Don’t skip the exercise. You will feel better and burn more calories.

Here is one of my favorite gluten free recipes for Thanksgiving. Green Bean Casserole is hands-down my husband’s favorite holiday side. I challenged myself to make a fresh, gluten-free version that would knock his socks off. I used fresh green beans and a delicious homemade mushroom sauce. He loves it!
